What is lip tie?

A lip tie, also known as a labial frenulum, is a condition in which the piece of tissue that connects the upper lip to the gum line is too thick or tight. This can restrict the movement of the lip and interfere with normal functions such as breastfeeding, speaking, and eating.

Symptoms of a lip tie may include difficulty latching onto the breast while breastfeeding, poor weight gain in infants, clicking sound while feeding, gumming or chewing on the nipple instead of grasping it properly, speech difficulties, and dental problems such as gaps between the front teeth.

Treatment for a lip tie may involve a simple procedure called a frenotomy, in which the tissue connecting the lip to the gum line is cut or released. This can improve the range of motion of the lip and alleviate symptoms associated with a lip tie.

It is important to consult with a healthcare provider if you suspect that you or your child has a lip tie, as they can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options.
